Exciting Energy

This week we have been learning about light, heat, and sound energy. We discovered that our sun is our greatest sort of light and heat for our world. We created a circle map where we drew pictures of items that give off light. Then, we covered our pictures with glitter to illustrate the light that they give off.

Then, we studied about heat energy and took this fun opportunity to use a heat source to make hot chocolate and applesauce. We also used our hot chocolate to melt candy canes and discussed some of the effects heat can have on objects. This was so much fun and delicious! Thank you to our parents who helped cut up apples and sent them to make this activity such a wonderful success! Here are some pictures from our fun event:

Finally, we learned about the science of sound and how sound energy can be used to make music. We learned how our vocal chords work and felt them vibrate. Then, we explored musical instruments made out of recyclable materials. We also created our own shakers and had a Christmas sing-a-long. Here are some pictures and videos from our explorations with sound:

TiPi Tellers

We were treated to an unique experience this week--the TiPi Tellers! We got to crawl inside a real teepee with some real Native American friends. They told us about their ancestors and showed us how they lived and survived out in the wild. Our favorite part of their visit was getting to hear them play their Native American instruments. We especially enjoyed listening to their drums and their flute. Since our teacher, Miss Todd, plays the flute too, this was an amazing opportunity to see the Native American flute and compare how it was alike and different from our teacher's current flute. We learned so much about Native American culture and want to thank our librarian, Mrs. Defoor, for providing us with this special opportunity. Here are some pictures and video from our fun day together. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think about them.

Amazing Addition

In math this week we continued our study of addition. Our favorite activity was domino addition where we used our iPads to write addition problems that we created from dominos. We had so much fun moving around the room solving addition problem after addition problem. Here are some cute pictures from this activity. Ask us how to solve your favorite addition problem for you!

Needs and Wants

We have been talking about the differences between needs and wants. We have learned that a need is something that you can not live without like food, water, shelter, and clothes. A want is something that you would like to have but could live without like toys. games, and even books. This week we had the opportunity to explore ways that we could meet our needs. We held a class jewelry store where we learned about self-producing, buying, and trading. We made bracelets (self producing), traded a few with our friends, and then used our hard worker dollars that we earned while working to buy new bracelets at our classroom store. Here are some pictures from our fun week. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think! Thanks!

Nutrition News

This week we studied about nutrition. First, we learned about how the foods that we like to eat come from farms. We created a circle map of plants that can be eaten, which are grown on a farm. Then, we learned about healthy food choices. Finally, we used magazines and cut out pictures of healthy foods that we would like to eat. We are sharing these projects with you here in this post. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
