Music Around the World--Week 4--Native America

Wow! Where do I begin! We had a wonderful time in our Music Around the World class today studying some of the beautiful music that came from Native America. After reviewing "It's a Small World," and "This Little Light of Mine", two of our songs from last week, we had the opportunity to learn about the legend of The Flute Player by listening to an old Apache legend. We learned that the flute is a special instrument to our teacher, Miss Todd, who plays it in a local orchestra. She had brought her flute with her to class today and shared a song with us called "Wind Song".  We also learned that the Native Americans used to play a sister instrument of the flute called a panpipe. Their panpipes were made out of reeds that had been cut different lengths and tuned to play various notes. Miss Todd showed us how to play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on the panpipes. Then, she taught us to play them and showed us how to create our very own panpipes. Here is a video of our lesson from today. We hope that you enjoy it! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

I had the privilege of sharing my flute with our kids today. Some of them wanted a copy of the song that I played for them. Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/user-955400071/offetorie

Hey Tiny Seed Are You Something We Need?

Over the past two weeks, our Kindergartners have been participating in a project based learning (PBL) experience. Our driving question was, "How can a tiny seed make a big difference in our world?" During this unit, our students learned about plants. They were challenged to think critically about how plants impact our world and if/why plants are something that we need. Throughout these two weeks they learned the needs of plants, patterns in nature (life cycles of plants), how young plants resemble parent plants, how the Earth provides resources for life, and the parts of a plant. They participated in plant activities where these skills were reinforced. Here are some pictures from our special plant studies this week!

Library Learnings

We have been having such a wonderful time at library each week! We have been blessed with a chance to snuggle into our library corner and read our favorite books by flashlight. We also enjoyed exploring with robots. We created a trail for them to follow with our markers and then set them off on their journey along the path we had made for them! Check out the fun below:
