Snowmen with Second Grade

We had so much fun today making snowmen with our friends from Mrs. Haley's Second Grade class! Miss Todd especially enjoyed getting to see her past Kindergartners help her current class! Here is a cute show of our time together. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think. Thanks again to Mrs. Haley and her sweet students! We had a wonderful time!

Super Scientists

We recently completed a study of wood. During this unit, we were introduced to five different kinds of wood--pine, redwood, and basswood, which are made from nature, and plywood and particle board, which are made by man. We observed these wood samples and then explored ways that we could change them. We participated in several experiments with wood including a challenge to sink the pine and plywood and an opportunity to combine and separate sawdust and shavings and water. We also learned how to make plywood and practiced changing wood using sandpaper. We recorded our wood explorations in the show below. We hope you like it! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think! Thanks!

STEAM Night

Wow! What a night! We had the opportunity to participate in STEAM Night tonight where our Kindergarten families competed to build the tallest tower using fifty dixie cups, a yard of tape, and scissors. They had twenty minutes to work together to complete their mission. Here is video of our challenge event and some pictures from our fun night! We hope that you had a wonderful time!

Bear Day

This week we studied bears during our science unit. We learned nonfiction facts about bears such as where they live, what they like to eat, and what they look like. Then, we studied fiction stories such as Corduroy, Going on a Bear Hunt, and A Pocket for Corduroy. Below you can see pictures from our fun "Bear Day". During "Bear Day," we brought our bears to school and allowed them to learn alongside us for a whole school day. We also enjoyed a special "paw print in the snow" snack. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think about our special day!

Bear Day

We recorded what we knew about bears, what we wanted to learn, and what we learned from our bear stories.

We used this double bubble map to record the things that were the same and different about real bears and stuffed bears like Corduroy.

I Have a Dream!

This week in Kindergarten we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he helped to change our world for the better! We read about his dream that he had for our world and learned about his many accomplishments. Then, we talked about what our dreams are for the future and what we hope happens to make our world a better place one day! Here are some pictures from our fun week and a video of us sharing our dreams with the world! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think! Share your dreams with us, too! We would love to learn about your hopes for our future world! :)

Honoring Our Hero

We have had the privilege of honoring one of our special students and her Dad this semester as he serves our country in Iraq. On Veteran's Day, we sent him a care package and some handmade thank you cards. We wanted him to know how thankful we are that he is helping to protect us here at home. We were excited to welcome him home before our Christmas Break and created a banner for his sweet daughter to surprise him with! He then surprised us with a visit to our classroom and some very delicious pizza and juice boxes! We had a wonderful time getting to visit with him and were so glad to welcome him home safely! This week he returned to his duties in Iraq, and we plan to continue keeping him in our thoughts throughout his tenure there. He will have to keep one eye on his mailbox over the next few months, as we plan to keep the treats coming his way too! Here is to our very special hero! :)

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

This week in Kindergarten we have been studying about winter in science. We have learned about what clothes you need to wear in winter, fun activities you can do in the winter, and things that animals do in the winter time. During the week we created several exciting winter art projects including pasta snowflakes, winter trees, and snowmen. We also had the opportunity to create snowflakes in our art class with Mr. Logan. Here are some pictures of our exciting creations. Leave us a comment and let us know what you think of them!

In math this week, we studied about subtraction. We learned that subtraction means to remove something from a group. We practiced creating our own subtraction problems using the minus and equal signs. You can see how we made subtraction problems by illustrating a friend loosing teeth and how we wrote and illustrated our own subtraction problems about a pet store in the attached pictures.

Finally, in our Language Arts studies this week, we learned about capital letters that are made with sticks. We used craft sticks and practiced making capital letters. Did you know that we can make all of the capital letters using four craft sticks or less? Check out our pictures and then try it for yourself at home this week!

We also talked about adjectives and created bubble maps to describe an animal that we like! Here are some great examples of our work! Enjoy!
