Popsicles and the Playground

Our Kindergarten-Second Grade students stayed after school recently to enjoy a Popsicles and Playground Party benefiting our Find Your Light Service Project. Our students had an awesome time enjoying a cool tasty treat and spending some extra time playing with their friends! Not only did we have a wonderful time, but we were able to continue to add funds to our service project! Here are some sweet pictures from our fun afternoon together! We hope you enjoy them!

Technology, Transportation, and Team Work!

Wow! What a busy week we have had this week in Kindergarten! We have been studying about technology in the past and present. We learned how technology is any tool that makes a task easier. We discovered that even a pencil or crayon can be a type of technology. We learned about how in the past people used chalk to write. We also took time to study about how our technology tools have evolved over the years. Some of the items that we talked about included how we used to use candles and now use lightbulbs for lighting, we used to use a broom and rug beater and now use vacuums, and how we used to use a brick oven and now use conventional ovens for cooking.

In science, we learned about transportation and the way that things move. We enjoyed reading stories about transportation vehicles and learning songs like the "Wheels on the Bus". We learned how buses can move forward and backwards, left and right, and that the windows can go up and down. Then, we created our very own shape buses and used them to practice the movements that we have learned. Here are some pictures of our fabulous creations.

Finally, we studied how things move and the force that is needed to move an object. We brought items from home that can be moved and explored what we have to do in order to make them do so. Then, we created a list of all of the ways that our toys could move. We learned about the force push and pull. We sorted our toys and decided which ones could be pushed, pulled, or both. Then, we completed an investigation where we used marbles and applied different forces to them to see if we could alter the way they moved. Please check out our video of our marble investigation below.

As a culminating activity, we participated in a movement challenge where we had to use different supplies such as marbles, straws, cups, a marble run, foam blocks, wooden blocks, and recyclable materials to make a marble move without touching it. We had a wonderful time and learned a lot about force and motion. Please check out all of our pictures and videos from our experiments below.

Northeast Texas Children's Museum

We were blessed this week to have the opportunity to visit the Northeast Texas Children's Museum in Commerce, Texas. During our stay, we learned about wind and wind tunnels, solid/liquids/gases, and bones. Then, we were treated to a plethora of learning stations where we played, explored, and observed our world around us. If you ever get the chance to visit this children's museum, take it...you will be glad you did! :)

Here is a show and some pictures of our fun day! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think! :)

Comparing Numbers 1-5

In math this week, we played many different games that allowed us to compare the numbers one through five. We began our week by playing Roll and Record where we would roll a dice and write the number that we got. Then, we would record that number in our graph and race to see which number made it to the top first. This game gave us the opportunity to practice counting and writing our numbers one to five. After that, we participated in a game called Face Off. In this game, we rolled a dice and found the number that we got on our mat. Then, we had to place that counter on the correct number in our line of numbers. Whoever was able to place all of their counters in the correct spot first was the winner. Finally, we learned about the different combinations of numbers that can add up to a larger number, while playing Toss the Chips. We discovered that 2+3=5 and 4+1=5. Please ask us about these games at home, while you enjoy looking at our pictures and videos from our fun week together!
