Music Around the World--Week 4--Native America

Wow! Where do I begin! We had a wonderful time in our Music Around the World class today studying some of the beautiful music that came from Native America. After reviewing "It's a Small World," and "This Little Light of Mine", two of our songs from last week, we had the opportunity to learn about the legend of The Flute Player by listening to an old Apache legend. We learned that the flute is a special instrument to our teacher, Miss Todd, who plays it in a local orchestra. She had brought her flute with her to class today and shared a song with us called "Offetorie".  We also learned that the Native Americans used to play a sister instrument of the flute called a panpipe. Their panpipes were made out of reeds that had been cut different lengths and tuned to play various notes. Miss Todd showed us how to play "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on the panpipes. Then, she taught us to play them and showed us how to create our very own panpipes. Here is a video of our lesson from today. We hope that you enjoy it! Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

I had the privilege of sharing my flute with our kids today. Some of them wanted a copy of the song that I played for them. Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/user-955400071/offetorie
Hope you enjoy it! :)

Storytelling and Symbols

In Social Studies this week we learned about maps and how they use symbols to represent places or locations on a map. We created our own maps of two of our favorite stories using their settings as landmarks for our symbols. Then, we practiced retelling our stories just for you! Check out these awesome pictures from our adventures in maps this week:

Super Soil

Our Watson Wildcat Kindergartners have had a wonderful week studying soil. We have played in the dirt, dug in the dirt, and even eaten dirt! All the while, we have learned about organisms that live in the soil and why soil is important to our world. Here are some fun pictures from our exciting adventures in soil:
